Suunto Global Navigator Compass MC-2G
Excellent quality. Thoroughly impressed.
This patented design is superior to all others. Note, I said ALL. Other brands and designs are second tier to this unit. The Global design makes it usable in any place you can find, except in polar regions where you use a dipping needle instead. This wouldn't bother most users and this usage applies to other brands and designs, also.
I have used this instrument in the USA for a couple of years now, and it's never let me down or shown any change in performance.
The Suunto Global Navigator Compass MC-2G is a very nice but expensive compass. I wanted a compass that can go anywhere like my military compass that I was issued back in 1983 and is still working. The MC-2G is a big difference and there is a learning curve because of all it's features. The markings in the center are very small especially at night. Overall the compass has great craftsmanship, light weight, and has different uses. Since I have retired from 32 years of service, I will not get to use the compass on deployments, parachute jumps, or repelling out of helicopters. The MC-2G is plastic so care will have to be taken when carrying so it does not crack or break. Markings on the outside edge are about a 10 font size. Inside center of bezel ring is about a 2-3 font size. Bezel ring is about 8-9 font size. Night navigation will require white or blue light to use unlike the military that you can use red, blue, green, or white. The ability to adjust declination is a nice feature to lock in for your map/area and forget about it. Having a slope ruler is nice once you get the hang of it. Built in protractor is nice to have but I would carry a military protractor as well because it is just easier to plot with a standard protractor. Time will tell if the plastic is tough enough to carry in pouch, pocket, or bag. Needle is very sensitive to metal even a plastic $25 Timex watch or the silver wedding band I wear on my watch will move the needle by 3-4 degrees. Ensure you remove your jewelry when using compass and don't have any metal hanging from your clothing or a metal belt buckle. I give it four stars for the price and the sensitivity around metals. For the price the compass should include a good carrying case. The MC-2G compass does fit in a military compass/first aid pouch but because the compass is plastic, care must be taken when snapping the case closed so you don't break or crack plastic compass. Instructions for use of all features are in the package with compass size 3 font, but you do need to practice and read other material or watch YouTube videos if you are a beginner in compass use. If your an old dog like I am you can use the compass magnifying lens to read the instructions.
Pros: Good illumination. Good for precise azimuth. Compass sticks to the map.
Cons: The biggerst problem for me is The 1-25k / 1-50k scale, which is somewhat confusing.
The red markings DISAPPEAR in red light. All markings should be black. A bit bulky.
Leaves to be desired.
