Self Reliance Outfitters offers guided survival courses that teach people how to support their basic needs and navigate unexpected challenges in the wilderness. You’ll learn how to use bushcraft tools, such as knives, headlamps, and fire-starting instruments, so you can take on the outdoors with the confidence of an expert. Learn the fundamentals, get advice from our instructors, or just spend a day pushing personal limits under our watch.
Classes by Skill Level
While you don’t need a mastery of situational skills to brave the outdoors, it’s still very helpful to have. Simply stock up on tools, techniques, and in our case, instructors, matched to your experience level so you can effortlessly tack on outdoor skills that feel achievable and rewarding.
Although it may be tempting to begin at the top, we offer basic-level survival courses, such as our intro to survival class, for those just starting out in bushcraft. This way, you'll be able to handle unexpected twists and turns with more than just a survival kit.
Intro to Survival
Learn the ways of a lifelong outdoorsman with our foundational Intro to Survival class. Taught by one of our bushcraft experts, you'll spend a week diving headfirst into nature using our Pathfinder Survival School system.
Landing at around 72 hours, this course places you in a hands-on survival scenario where you must use your essential skills to stay comfortable. Intro scenarios include tactical challenges that you'd encounter on any level, like starting a fire using natural resources and a few tools or gathering food in a secluded area.

Our basic survival course is an extension of the introductory thought patterns and techniques taught in the Intro to Survival class. Here, we help you cover more ground with slightly more advanced situations, like immediate fire starting, water collection in a camping setting, and self-aid.
Hunting isn't an essential task we train others on, but you will learn how to collect food in this basic course. The goal in each of our professionally designed courses is to challenge you to rely on your natural instincts. You’ll be shown how to guide yourself to food, water, and a greater sense of safety.

Our mid-level Intermediate Survival class is best suited for those with a greater understanding of survival techniques, but not quite yet at an advanced level. There's always room to go further and learn more at Self Reliance Outfitters.
The main difference between the basic level course and our intermediate one is duration. You will spend multiple nights in a water-deprived, resource-limited space, working with the skills we give you to stay alert and comfortable. Don’t worry: There is a meeting and water supply location at each simulation point, so you will not have to go at anything without backup.

This course is designed to be challenging. And in some cases, impossible. You must be physically fit, mentally tough, and above all, open to anything if you are to finish this course successfully. Class & Gear FAQs
What gear is provided by Self Reliance Outfitters?
We list all of the provided survival gear under each class type. While most of the necessary equipment, tools, and protective gear are given to you, there are still a few essentials you'll need to buy yourself. Check out the full required gear list for more information.
Please note: This list does not apply to advanced courses.
Will I be able to leave the campsite for any reason during my class?
No, you may not leave the campsite once your class has begun. In addition to not being able to leave, you cannot be on the campgrounds without an instructor present. This is to guarantee your safety, along with your instructors and classmates.
If you have an essential item (such as medication) that you must have access to at all times, store it effectively in your rented cabin or constructed shelter.
Can I rent a cabin for the duration of my class?
Yes, you can. We offer cabin rentals at either a 3-day or 4-day rate, depending on your class schedule. You can arrive and access your cabin rental prior to your class's start time. Simply check in between the hours of 5 PM and 9 PM for complete access. For more information about survival school cabin rentals, go here.
Can I store my gear in my vehicle?
No, all gear will need to be stored in the individual's rented or constructed shelter for safekeeping. Because our courses revolve around the unexpected, we need you to stay prepared by having your gear on standby.
What is your class cancellation policy?
We ask that you inform us of your cancellation at least 30 days before your scheduled class. This gives us time to redistribute your gear to an attending member. Allow someone else plenty of time to take your spot. As far as cancellations go, you are eligible for a full refund within the valid time period.
How do you know if you've passed a class?
A formal patch is awarded upon completion of each level.. For example, all Basic Class members who have successfully completed the course are given a Basic Class Patch to commemorate their success. Please let us know beforehand if you intend to complete the course for patch certification.
