Multi (Function) Fire Tool

This is my second Multi-Fire Tool, though the first still works well. I keep a woods runner's kit in each vehicle now that I'm retired. My modifications to perfect this great resource are in progress.

For the backpacker and the weight-conscious user, the arrowhead design weighs about 3.5 ounces (100 grams). For comparison, the more traditional C-Steel is half of that weight, though the shapes of the two may also influence a user’s choice. The choice may depend on how they carry the tool. Both designs I’ve received from Self Reliance Outfitters (SRO) fit into the ubiquitous Altoids tin that bush crafters often use.

For those new to woodcraft / bushcraft, this Multi-Fire Tool (and other carbon steels like 1095) will also strike sparks on many types of stone, not just on flint. Quartz stones and chert from any creek bed and even shards of agate from those old fancy bookends can be “shattered” with big rocks or hammers to create sharp edges to strike sparks from the metal tool.

Which leads to sharing my modifications of the Multi-Fire Tool.

A little bit of work with diamond or stone sharpener gets the "tumbled" edges squared for ferro rod use, fish scaling, or other scraping duties (like bark for tinder). The concave curved edges (where the binding would go on an arrowhead) shower sparks like a volcanic eruption when the edges are refined with a Dremel sanding drum, though the convex edges work nearly as well with ferro rods when those edges are “sharpened” on a stone.

With similar effort, deliberate rounding of the edges in the center of the arrowhead shape provide for lashing the Multi Fire Tool to any Molle webbing or belt arrangement without cutting or abrading the lashings. Sure, as mentioned above, the Multi-Fire Tool fits inside a tinder box (tin) as easily as any steel striker, but the way I adapt Molle ammo pouches for knife sheathing makes this Molle lashing option a useful one.

I don’t use the bearing block feature. Too much work for an old guy. Recalling the bow drill methods used in my youth I’ve no doubt it would work well when lubricated. Gloves would help with any frictional heating.

This order was the first problem I've had with any of my several orders from Self Reliance Outfitters, but Jamie and their customer service team worked it out well and quickly. They initially sent me the "C Steel" striker by mistake, but when I decided to keep the C Steel and to reorder the Multi Fire Tool, they cut me a nice deal on the reorder when we squared up the prices.

In every case, with every purchase I've made, Self Reliance Outfitters has delivered quickly and efficiently. I have zero hesitation recommending them to any woods runner out there who needs the (often) unique items that the SRO team offers to those of us who still go outside to play in the dirt.
