I don't leave home without Fatwood. I always keep a couple small pieces with my knife. I don't know anything else that starts a fire in the rain as well as Fatwood! It's also surprisingly hard to find in the wild. It's like gold to me when I do.
Been trying to work on my outdoor gear and still needed some help in starting fires with the usually damp wood here in Kentucky. Ordered the fatwood bag and was thrilled with the quantity, and quality of it. This makes short work of starting fires, and the bag that came with it was a very nice surprise.
Fatwood - Lrg Bag
Great (and cheap) bundle of good quality fatwood! Fatwood is not readily available where I am, but I always like to have plenty on hand. This bundle is good and affordable with that wonderfully distinct pinesol gasoline scent that means the real deal and an easy fire! The bundle included good size sticks and a few really fat boys. I have used skinnier whole pieces which go right up, but more commonly use scrapings which I take off with the spine of my knife. More recently I have kept a tin of thicker shavings off the stick. It takes a spark easily or lights up with one lighter flick. Cotton bag it came in is great for a lot of other uses as well, and 1 lb. should last me a good long time.
Great stuff! In New England, good fatwood is hard to find. Having some of this with me will cover my butt when I can't find some birch bark. They're good sized chunks. I got a dozen in my order, enough for a bunch of fires. As a bonus, it comes in a stout cloth bag.
