Mora Garbera

I have been backpacking for more than 50 years, mostly in California, mostly in Yosemite. As I've gotten older, I've tried to reduce the weight I carry. I've been carrying a folding Gerber for a number of years, weighing 100 grams. But watching the strength and utility of the Garberg on TikTok convinced me that a survival type knife would be good to have if everything goes wrong in the boondocks. It's well made, feels great in my hand, very practical, not very pretty. I'm looking forward to starting some fires and splitting some wood this summer. I'll be the old guy, not very fast, but getting there.

Exactly the knife I needed.

I bought this knife as an scaled-down alternative to my Scorpion HD for EDC. For a city-boy, the HD is a bit on the large/heavy side, though I'm otherwise totally in love.

I couldn't be more happy. This is a beautiful knife. Nothing like the HD as far as the level of security and confidence it inspires as a "one-tool" option, but something that I'm confident will be enough if I have to get home or get by in an emergency. I'm glad to not need to worry so much about caring for a high-carbon blade too.

The handle is outstanding. The grip is ridiculously comfortable - reversible too, which is a big plus. The metal striker at the end is something I would prefer to do without. Sure, it strikes sparks, and could provide a decent striking surface if needed, but its a potential problem if needing to push down on the knife, or use it like a drill. If I have access to a grinder, it's coming off. Not worth taking off a star though.

I'm on the fence about the multi-mount sheath. It does provide lots of carry options, but one disappointment is the nice snap-over cover of the Molle option isn't there when used with the belt hanger. The knife gently clicks into the sheath, but that's all. Not confidence inspiring. Too bad, I'm sure they could have designed it to work both ways.

The blade? Damn was it sharp of the box! Not that I care, but very impressive. It is a breeze to sharpen to a wicked edge. No word how well it holds an edge yet, but lovin' it so far.

Great Knife!

This is my favorite knife that I own. I've had it for well over a year now and use it extensively almost daily. (except in deep winter, when I use the Eldris) The Garberg and my Mora Eldris are my two main knives. I have many others, but those two are my favorite. The knife comes razor sharp, and you can maintain it easily on a strop.
I never baton more than small kindling, but this will do that and larger pieces easily.(I never baton anything thats more than 3 inches, just because it can be bad for the blade to go through knots and such.)
This knife carves nicely, would carve slightly better though if it had a scandi grind on it, like my other Moras. Not much better, though, and the added durability of having that steeper grind more than makes up for it. The steel is great, I only have to sharpen/strop it(depending on how much I've used it) once or twice a week. If I put the extra time in to get it truly razor sharp, it's still working sharp by the end of the week.
The multi-mount sheath is, in my opinion, the better option. You can actually wear this as a large, heavy neck knife, if you so choose. You can strap it to a canoe, a car, a backpack, or even a tree, but to me this has always been a belt knife. Very high quality blade, Works well, practically invincible to rust. If you want a good indestructible knife, this might be the way to go.

Mora Garberg rocks

I ordered a Garberg and received it yesterday. I already took it to the Appalachian Trail near me in Eastern Pennsylvania and put it to work. I day hike mostly, and will be in the woods from sun up to sun set and I wanted a knife with ease of maintenance, sharp edge and a nice heft. The Garberg fills the bill. It shaved wood for feather sticks, cut tinder and kindling very well and threw sparks like a flamethrower! Had a fire going in just a few minutes. I am very happy with it after a day and can only see myself being happier with it in the future! The sheath is awesome too. I attached it to my Pathfinder water pouch. Easily accessible!
