Women's Wilderness Weekend Class

Women’s Wilderness Weekend (4 days, 3-night course)

Class Limit 12

Start time: 8 am (first day of class)

Women’s Wilderness Weekend is a course directed towards women to encourage more female participation in the field of bushcraft and survival. This class is catered towards students from all skill levels and no experience is required. Whether you are a proclaimed survivalist, a weekend bushcrafter, a homesteader, an ultralight hiker, or just a general every day woodswoman this class is designed to promote a sense of community through our shared love of nature. With the safe use of our primary tool, an axe, we will build a long term bushcraft basecamp around a central fire creating a kitchen area with benches, chairs, and fencing along with beds entirely off the landscape. Students will walk away with the knowledge of how to harvest various materials from the forest floor for shelter, containers and friction fire, how to identify a handful of medicinal trees, how to process woodland game, as well as several different knots, notches and lashings on top of some handcrafted projects at the end of the course. Other topics will include safety, hygiene, and how to develop a sense of resilience through self-reliance as both a community and as individuals in the wild.

A broad overview of tasks or what you can expect are:

  • hikes of 1-2 miles over terrain which may be uneven or muddy
  • collection of materials off the landscape
  • dealing with the elements (Cold, Rain, etc.)

Water will be available from jugs located in Base Camp. We continually check the water supply to make sure it is readily available.

We do not allow anyone to remain at camp without an instructor present.

If you suffer from a medical condition that requires medication, please bring your prescribed medicines with you. If you undergo surgery or a hospital stay within 30 days of the class, DO NOT attempt this course as there may be some heavy lifting.

This is a LOW-intensity level class with some walking at a slow pace to observe nature, learn natural navigation, learn tree/plant species and select project materials.  Sheltering is an aspect of bushcraft that we will addressed in this class, but personal shelters are not discussed on night one so students will be able to camp in tents or hammocks. Students are also encouraged to stay on site for the remainder of the course. There are no timed deliverables or qualifications in this class so no pressure. There will be a group meal shared over a fire each night but other meals and dietary restrictions may not be taken into account so students should bring food/snacks to cover each day.
