In addition to Dave Canterbury and additional Pathfinder School instructors, guest instructor Rich Becker will be teaching this class.

ABOUT - Rich Becker began his relationship with the wilderness when his family moved to New Jersey next to a seemingly unlimited state forest when he was nine years old. Since then he has been chasing wild spaces for over 40 years. He enjoys backpacking, mountain biking, skiing, snowboarding, hunting, teaching wilderness first aid, and sailing. 

 Rich has more than 20 years experience as an EMT / WEMT. He has worked for Ventura County, Fillmore City, and Riverside County Fire Departments. He has guided backpacking treks in the western United States, is a wilderness first aid trainer, and has been a camp medic and Scoutmaster for Boy Scouts of America.

 Rich has two degrees with honors from UC Santa Barbara and a Masters in Education. He is currently a full time high school Earth and Space Science teacher in California.

 As a scoutmaster for many years, Rich believes wholeheartedly in the Scout Law and especially in the Scout Motto; “Be prepared.”

Description:

This course is designed for anyone who works or spends time in remote environments and will teach you advanced skills to be used in emergencies when help from professional first responders may be far away and significantly delayed. Based on the Boy Scouts of America Wilderness First Aid Curriculum and Doctrine Guidelines, this Red Cross Wilderness and Remote First Aid course aligns with OSHA’s Best Practices for Workplace First Aid Training Programs. You will learn to identify, care for, and manage traumatic and medical emergencies for extended periods of time in a wilderness context. This course is a combination of classroom learning, scenario driven exercises, and wilderness skill lessons to give you and your team the best chances of surviving injury or illness in remote settings.

Prerequisites:

Must be at least 14 years old and hold current adult CPR/AED certification. Can be obtained solely online through Red Cross Adult CPR/AED Online (90 day skills requirement not needed to take our WFA course)

Certification:

  • 2 Year American Red Cross Certification (Wilderness and Remote First Aid).
  • Digital Wilderness and Remote First Aid certificate available upon successful completion of course

Course Length:

28 hours total:

  • 16 hours WFA + 12 hours Wilderness Skills (students must attend the full course to certify)
  • 1 hour lunch around 12pm Th, F, and Sa
  • 2 hour night scenario on Saturday evening and 2 hour final practical and written evaluation on Sunday.

Daily Schedule:

  • Thursday: 9am - 6pm
  • Friday: 9am - 6pm
  • Saturday: 9am - 6pm and 8pm - 10pm
  • Sunday: 9am - 11am

    The Pathfinder 10 C’s

    The course will incorporate the 10 C's of Survivability. Please separate the 10 C's into an easily accessible backpack or haversack (shoulder bag) as these will be used during the course.

     IMPORTANT: This class will require hikes of 2+ miles at a time in possibly very muddy and uneven while carrying your gear. Port-a-Pots are located approximately 400 yards from the base camp near the parking area. Water is available from jugs always located in Base Camp.

    If you suffer from a medical condition or chronic pain, please bring your prescribed medicines with you. If you have recently undergone surgery or a hospital stay within the last 30 days, DO NOT attempt this course until you have had more time to recuperate.

    Due to property insurance restrictions: There will be NO camping on the school property prior to the start of the class or after the class concludes.

    If you need to cancel..

    Once you purchase a class for The Pathfinder School, the Pathfinder Gathering, or for a Self Reliance Outfitters store event, you have up to 14 days before the event or class to cancel and receive a refund. This provides us time to open the spot for someone else to purchase. 

    Any cancellations past that threshold will not be eligible for a refund. A cancellation due to an emergency will be handled on a case-by-case basis and will only be eligible for a store gift card.

    If you do not show up for a class or event your registration fees are forfeited, and no refunds or store credits will be issued.

    If a class gets canceled...

    We require a minimum of 5 to 10 students to conduct a class (depending on the class).  If a class needs to be cancelled due to an insufficient number of registrations, you will be contacted by phone or email. You will then have the option to transfer to another class (if available), receive a store gift card, or a refund.

    Please note: The Pathfinder School LLC is not responsible for travel expenses, airline tickets, or other accommodations if a class is cancelled.

    A. Opossum Hollow - 12x16 Bunkhouse

    2. Each bunk can be rented individually at the rate of $50.00 (total) for a 3-day class, or $75.00 (total) for a 4-day class.
    3. Bunks will be sold on a first come first served basis and paid for at the time the reservation is made.

    5. Cancellation Policy: A reserved bunk must be cancelled no later than 3 weeks prior to the first day of class to receive a refund.

    B. Fox Den - 10x14 cabin

    This cabin can be reserved in two ways.

    1. A family/group can reserve the cabin (up to 4 people) - $150 (total) for a 3-day class or $250 (total) for a 4-day class. To receive the family/group rate, the cabin must be reserved prior to the first day of class.
    2. Fox Den can only be reserved prior to the first day of class by a family or group.
    3. If the cabin is NOT reserved the first day of any course, the individual bunks may be rented at the rate of $50.00 (total) for a 3-dayclass, or $75.00 (total) for a 4-day class.

    5. Cancellation Policy: A reserved cabin must be cancelled no later than 3 weeks prior to the first day of class to receive a refund.

    All students must read, agree, and sign a Liability Waiver and Release form for the Pathfinder School LLC and the venue prior to attending the course. This can be signed brought to the course/event and given to staff upon arrival. No student will attend training/event without both forms being on file. Please note we do not share this information with anyone.
