Primitive Trapping, Tackling and Tanning

Primitive Trapping, Tackling and Tanning

3 Days

Limit to 12 Students

Description:

Trapping, Tackling and Tanning will aid in your knowledge of self-reliance as you learn to build a life in the wilderness beyond your need to just staying alive in the short term. This class was designed to introduce students how to source wild game for meat, fur and other materials in a primitive fashion, or without the use of modern traps. We will discuss the history and ethics of primitive trapping and together will construct various land traps designed to catch animals both big and small. This will then be taken a step further as we adapt our land traps for water and learn how to replace our tackling instruments such as gigs and gaff hooks and make them off the landscape. As a class, we will also learn techniques like net making and building cage traps and how they can be interchangeable from land to coastal waters. We will also introduce students how to use all parts of the animal by creating simple bone tools as well as textiles through tanning. Students will walk away with the knowledge of how to harvest various materials from woodland game, how to preserve and cook meat in the wild, as well as several different knots, notches and lashings on top of their numerous handcrafted projects at the end of the course.

This is a LOW-intensity level class with some walking for resource collection and demonstrations.  Students will be expected to be able to walk up to 5 miles on Day 2 to explore the neighboring wildlife area. There are no timed deliverables or qualifications in this class so no pressure.
