Primitive Trapping Concepts

The purpose of this class is to introduce students to the materials used to construct traps as well as the methods for contracting them. We will also discuss and demonstrate the proper set locations and use of Animal sign to ensure good location. We will create many forms of traps for all types of small and medium game as well as fish and birds.

Outline:

  • Location selection and Sign
  • Live catch vs Killing traps
  • Basic Carving of triggers and component parts
  • Cage Traps
  • Deadfalls
  • Trail Traps and Spear Traps
  • Making and using Nets
  • Snare type traps for both Birds and Mammals
  • Spring Poles for Fishing
  • Water Trapping for Fish and Turtles


Students will need the following gear for this class:

  • Basic Camp Gear and Food for 1 overnight
  • Project Specific Gear
  • Anvil Shears - purchase here
  • Folding Saw
  • Knife (for fine carving work) Mora 510 or Companion Recommended
  • 2 roll of #36 Bank Line
  • 1 Roll of #8 Bankline
