This is a follow up review to the one I wrote in Feb. when I first got the axe.
I have taken this axe on every hike and overnighter this year. I have done this so I could put it through its paces. And I can say I love this axe. It was worth every penny. I have felled trees around my property and chopped and split wood for the campfires as well. It has taken to every task put before it without hesitation. I said before that this axe was a beast and it is.
Some might find this it heavy for backpacking. But I love it.
I got mine in Germany as a souvenir of my time living there. Worth every penny! They have been hand forging axes since 1844. I also have a Gränsfurs Bruks, and Helko is easily of a similar quality. This is a high-quality axe that doesn’t get a lot of attention. Buy with confidence.
Just arrived a couple of days ago. It is just what I wanted. I have used it around the yard to get a feel for it and am planning to hit the trail with it tomorrow. Some people might find this axe to be heavy. But for me, it is just right. I plan on using it for trail maintenance and for trips lasting more than one night. Also I paid extra for the sharpening service. Best $7.00 I've spent. Didn't have to touch the edge at all. This is a beast of an axe and just what I have been looking for in a pack axe.
Bit was a little rough and took some finishing but overall this thing is a beast for its size. Great product.
Top notch steel, great handle, overall an excellent deal. Will need sharpening to fine tune the cutting edge.
This axe is a bit heavy to be a shorter handle, so just be aware. I wouldn't want to backpack it, but what I bought it for (carrying on an ATV to clear up trails) it fits the bill.
The only negative I have is that the alignment of the cutting edge is off center with the handle. This also happened with the Hults Akka and I returned it and bought this. This one was not as bad as the Akka, only off a few degrees. So it was just acceptable. I don't understand how this happens, as that is one of the most important elements of an axe, for the bit to be in perfect alignment with the handle.
Overall, I love the steel and the shape and the heavy duty aspect of the axe.
