Product Description

Advanced Survival - New York

Class Location:

Camp Chingachgook
1872 Pilot Knob Road
Kattskill Bay, NY 12844

Start Time: 8 am (first of the class)

5 days, 4 nights, 3.5 CEU's

Prerequisite: You must have completed at minimum the Intermediate Survival course before enrolling.

The Advanced Survival Class places a great demand on your ability to perform skills taught in other courses at The Pathfinder School ranging from friction fire off the landscape to advanced navigation to long term shelter construction and water disinfection. You are expected to “own” the Basic and Intermediate level skills, therefore instruction in this course is limited to new topics only. We will test the limits of your current knowledge base forcing you to undergo stress, water, sleep, and food deprivation until you accomplish true to life tasks that may be needed in a real emergency.

Lessons are taught and deliverables added daily regardless of whether or not the entire group is caught up, which brings many to the mental breaking point. There is an 80% tap out rate for this course primarily due to students that do not physically and mentally prepare themselves beforehand by training in all the skills of previous courses, exercising regularly and mentally expecting the unexpected. Critical thinking and time management skills are vitally important in this course, often more so than skill.

Keep in mind that nothing is flat in the Adirondacks. In addition to the physical preparation recommended for the Intermediate Course, students should incorporate hills in their training leading up to any Adirondack Course.

There will be no camping available at the Adirondack Campus prior to the start of the course or after the course has been completed due to insurance restrictions.

All students must read, agree, and sign a Liability Waiver and Release form for the Pathfinder School LLC and the venue prior to attending the course. This can be signed brought to the course and given to staff upon arrival. No student will attend training without both forms being on file. Please note we do not share this information with anyone.

The Student Parking Lot for the Adirondack Campus is not located near the Base Camp. Students will not have access to vehicles for the duration of the course. There will not be access to electricity or running water. Freshwater will be available at the Base Camp at all times. Latrines (outhouse) are located within 50 meters of the base camp. Shower facilities are not available. Students will be required to stay in temporary survival shelters that they construct for both nights of this course. Tents, hammock systems, and coolers with food are not authorized at the Adirondack Campus as all gear must be carried from the Student Parking Lot to the Base Camp, and students will not be returning to vehicles until completion of the course. Students will not be permitted to leave the campus and stay at a hotel or purchase food while attending the course. No exceptions are made unless you leave the course entirely.

IMPORTANT: Regardless of your experience or skill level in the woods, the Advanced class is the most intense and rigorous class you will likely ever complete.  It has been compared to special forces training by those in the armed services (their words, not ours)- so you should be reasonably fit and healthy to expect to complete this course. This class will include treks up to 20 miles daily collecting resources over terrain which may be very muddy and uneven while carrying your gear. All food, water, and toilet facilities must be procured from the landscape with minimal gear.

If you suffer from a medical condition or chronic pain, please bring your prescribed medicines with you. If you have recently undergone surgery or a hospital stay within the last 30 days, DO NOT attempt this course until you have had more time to recuperate.

It is highly recommended that you physically prepare yourself at least a month in advance to this or any other Pathfinder course by hiking/ walking regularly (at least 3 times weekly) for 5K working up to a pack weight of 50lb before the class begins. As the premier school of self-reliance, our training exceeds that of any other school in the nation; so please take it seriously and take the time to physically prepare. It is strongly recommended to take the Basic, Pioneer, Scout and Wilderness First Aid classes before taking this Advanced class.

    Age Requirement:
Students must be at least 18 years of age to attend this course. It's strongly recommended that they have completed a Pioneer Survival course prior to enrollment.

NOTE: IF YOU NEED TO ORDER ITEMS FROM SELF RELIANCE OUTFITTERS YOU MUST DO SO NO LATER THAN TWO WEEKS PRIOR TO CLASS TO ENSURE YOU RECEIVE YOUR GEAR. ORDERS CANNOT BE SHIPPED TO THE SCHOOL PROPERTY FOR PICK UP.

ADDITIONAL REQUIRED EQUIPMENT LIST:  Weather can change at any time in the mountains and present training participants with emergency weather conditions. In addition to the normal packing list, all students attending a course at the Adirondack Campus must bring the following:

    Layered Clothing System:

    • Wicking Base Layer: Light or Medium Weight Merino Wool Top and Bottom Recommended
    • Insulating Layer: Heavyweight Merino Wool Top and Bottom Recommended
    • Durable Layer: Normal street clothes for cold weather (Pants, T-Shirt, Long Sleeve Shirt; 2 sets recommended)
    • Wind/Waterproof Layer: Goretex Shell Parka and Pants Recommended
    • Wool Hat, Gloves, and Scarf
    • Wool Socks (3 Pair Minimum)
    • Appropriate Waterproof Boots or Shoes (2 Pair Recommended)
    • 30L Dry Bag

This clothing system may be worn as needed or placed in the dry bag on standby (administratively) for emergencies depending on weather conditions.

REFUND POLICY: We understand that things can happen. Up until fourteen (14) days prior to the start of the event, tickets may either be refunded or credited forward (students choice, credits must be used within the same calendar year). However, refunds are not authorized after the 14-day window has passed. In addition, no refunds will be issued for classes you do not show up for, do not pass, or those that you fail to complete for any other reason (including voluntarily withdrawing from a course).

PATCH POLICY: This is a Patch Qualification Course. When a student enrolls, it is fully expected that they intend to certify (and earn the patch) for the Basic Survival Course. If you fall behind due to an inability to complete assigned tasks but are still participating in training and attempting to complete them, keeping up with the group, and giving it your best, we will continue to work with you so that you can complete the course to the best of your ability. Should your ability to keep up with the group be hindered by an injury or medical issue, we will go above and beyond to help you by providing additional motivation, administering hydration, or aiding in your mobility for as long as you wish to continue the effort (and doing so will not jeopardize your health).

Should you refuse to participate in the training or voluntarily withdraw from the training (please note that these are both forms of quitting the course and no longer putting forth effort towards completion) you will be required to leave the school grounds immediately. We do not allow ANY students to remain in camp without the instructors’ present. In addition, we do not allow any students to remain after voluntary withdraw from the course.

It is perfectly acceptable to continue the training and complete the course without qualifying for the patch. Simply let the Instructor know that is your desire to continue training. Students that participate, to the best of their ability in all the training and make it to the end, will receive a Certificate of Completion for the Course. Failure to participate in all the training being conducted but staying until the last day is not considered course completion.

Students that have met the minimum requirements and completed the course will be issued a Basic patch and a Certificate of Completion signed by the Instructor Staff. Students who did not meet the minimum requirement, but still completed the course, will only receive a Certificate of Completion signed by the Instructor Staff. The certificates will note the 2.5 CEU’s that some employers may recognize as continuing education.

If you do not show up for a class or event your registration fees are forfeited and no refunds or store credits will be issued.
